I looked at all the reviews and thought hard about what size to get. as you know, many people say to size down at least half a size for the beckman/gentleman traveler. they say these boots are unlined and without an insole. this is only halfway true! there is no lining on the sides, yes; all that is there is the other side of the leather, no fabric (in fact there is no fabric anywhere on this boot). this is good for those of us in warmer climates. but reviewers are only partly correct when they say there is no insole. in fact, there is a permanent (unremovable) leather insole! many people say (and it was the design of Red Wing that) these boots are to be worn without additional insoles and that your foot should rest on the leather insole. this is the biggest point of controversy over the beckman/gentleman traveler. personally, i wear these boots without additional insoles, and i do so happily. the leather insole will... How long this takes depends on the type of leather, the thickness of the leather, and how long you wear your footwear. Always try on your boots while wearing a THIN sock. Remove any removable inserts. Once you have found a pair that fits well, consider that you'll eventually be switching to a thicker sock so be sure there's room in the length of the boot for that. Break the boots initially in by removing any removable inserts and wearing without any socks, or with a THIN sock. Lace them loosely but firmly. Do not tighten them as much as you can stand. Wear them as long as it takes for them to feel comfortable. Next, switch to the sock that you'll be wearing regularly. After the initial... Beautiful leather. Good, sturdy craftsmanship. Wonderful old-school styling. They're selling these boots (or similar boots) in high-end stores like J.Crew, etc. I'm sure I'll have them for years to come. One downside...expect a brutal break in period. Got mine yesterday and so far they're long, narrow and my heels come up, even with inserts (you'll need these). Might try the mink oil trick. I've been wearing them around the office and so far I can only stand and hour or two with them on. |
